Despite beheadings, US against hostage ransoms Sep 17 Unit 2

Even though ISIS has been making multiple threats and taking credit of executions, the U.S. is staying strong to their idea of not negotiating with terrorist.  The French have reportedly made deals with them recently and this has frustrated Obama and many other countries.  The idea that some countries are giving into terrorism is a sign of strength for ISIS.  This is why we can't do it.  That is the idea.

While that theory of not negotiating makes since the hostages that have been taken also have a right to be defended by the government.  Is it right to just doom the hostages to their death? No, of course not, but what else can we do.  Is there ever a right time to negotiate?  Earlier in the year 5 Taliban detainees were exchanged for 1 U.S. Sergeant.  Is this not a form of negotiation.  What made this ok, but it isn't ok to exchange money for journalist.

  1. It is never okay to negotiate with terrorists. When a country begins to do that, the terrorists start to target their people more and more, because they know that they can get money for them. Our policy keeps our endangered citizens safer than those of some other countries because it is simply not profitable to abduct American citizens. As far as Sergeant Bergdahl goes, I feel that we should not have negotiated the Taliban detainees for his release. I don't mean to sound calloused, but it simply isn't fair to set that precedent. Is it possible that the journalist were taken BECAUSE the American government was willing to negotiate for Bergdahl? Who knows? Frankly, though, negotiating with the terrorists really does just make it more likely that they will strike again.

  2. It would be a very terrible thing to just leave journalists to their death, but (and I don't what to sound like a terrible human) I think that they need to. We should definitely try to do our best when negotiating for them but it would be better than giving in to the demands of terrorists.

  3. Our countries safety is before anything else when it comes to these terrorists. We cannot negotiate with them because if we do we give them power and an incentive for more threats. We need to not repeat history and also help out our fellow countries from negotiating with them too. ISIS has not attacked the U.S. yet and we should be grateful for that.

  4. I think that if we do negotiate with them it will give them a reason to start taking more people hostage. There are possible other ways we could handle it though
