Teens charged after videos of mentally disabled man being beaten go viral Sep. 10 Unit 1

Several videos went viral showing a disabled man getting beat by a group of teenagers in Delaware.  The man suffers from neurodevelopmental disorder.  One of the videos shows the man being beaten by the teens and ridiculed by them.  The mans family says that he had thought of the teens as his friends and now he is suffering emotionally and physically.  The teens are being charged with misdemeanors and the local schools have promised proper punishment for those that were involved.

It is obvious that certain actions are required when an incident like this occurs.  These teens need to be punished for what they have done.  The question is how far do you go into punishing them though.  If you go to far then you completely ruin these kids future and that would put them at high risk of causing even more/worse trouble later in their lifes.  One of the kids that turned himself in was only 14.  What would be the limit to how far we can go to punishing them?

  1. Obviously something has to be done because those teenagers infringed on someone else's right to health and life. Now the question of how much to punish them. What would we do if those that had done this were adults? Punishments for people under 18 are less harsh, but by how much? It really is a difficult question to answer, but you can hardly say the teens didn't know any better. Really we want to change them, not break them, but that can be a seemingly impossible task.

  2. The actions by these teenagers need to go punished. But it can be hard finding a punishment as they are minors. I remember a while back, there was a story about how Drew Carey (the host of price is right) offered $10k to whoever found the students of a terrible prank that was filmed. The unknown students poured a bucket of pee on an autistic student who thought he was doing the ice bucket challenge. He suggested that when they get caught, that they she be expelled from school. I think that this would be an appropriate punishment for incidents like these.

  3. These actions need to be punished. I know that they are just juveniles, but this is not okay. How far are we going to let things go? We need to send a message that this is not okay to do no matter what age you are. They cannot be let off because they are fourteen years old.

  4. Theses actions need to be brought to attention to everyone and they need to be punished. More people need to be aware so we can stop these things from happening
